                  About the Camps:

Small Group Intensives with Coach Rowan
Tate
Ages 6-12*  Coed  For Semi-beginners to experienced players

With smaller groups, each student will get lots of 1-on-1,
direct teaching, specific to their own level of play!

Tons of learning AND tons of FUN!  In my experience the
kids have a blast at my camps, and surprisingly even young (6-8 year old) kids are engaged and having fun throughout the entire day!  Kids will also get to play soccer & other outdoor activities!  Camp also includes
prizes for all, healthy treats, and a pizza party the last day.
How will I bridge age and ability differences?
I vary the
complexity of material in lessons to suit all students -- often showing Grandmaster games of the highest caliber, which I can make understandable even to beginners -- and I will spend extra time playing more advanced students to ensure they are thoroughly challenged.

        Over the course of the camp we will cover a curriculum that will lay the foundation for solid chess play based on Grandmaster principles -- needed by both beginners and masters alike!  Over my 10 years of teaching kids chess as a primary profession,I've distilled down the essential chess knowledge and have simplified its delivery for young students.  This way they can learn and employ a directed thinking method for making sound, thoughtful decisions every move.
      Each chess camp will include: professional, interactive & fun chess lessons;
1-on-1 games with coach Rowan, as well as plenty with other kids; team games and "blind chess" game against coach Rowan; puzzle-race sessions; as well as discussion of the benefits of chess and various life lessons and skills learned; and a chess tournament and pizza party on the last day, including prizes and recognitions!
      In my clubs and camps I always encourage kids to see the benefit of learning chess, and to understand the importance of becoming smarter, more focused, persistent and an overall better person.  I aim to inspire their understanding of the value of this in contrast to the mainly pointless, unproductive behaviors (e.g., studying chess instead of playing mindless video games).  So they come away with more than just chess skill!  To learn more of the life skills and life lessons taught at chess camp, click here.

   As for safety, know that I have been teaching kids professionally for 10 years and know how keep the kids together in a group at all times (except for bathroom breaks).  Plus it will be a small group and easier to manage.  I have also been background-checked by numerous school districts with fingerprinting -- I did this to teach for two summers at BVSD's LifeLong Learning program, which you can call to verify.

    Have an interested student who is new to chess? They'll be eligible IF you have them watch my free chess videos, and practice until at least knowing all the moves.
